Summary
A broad-based module covering the chemistry, material properties and manufacturing methods relevant to polymers. Topics include:
- Polymer structure
- Viscoelasticity, time-temperature equivalence
- Rheology of polymer melts, heat transfer in melts, entanglements
- Properties of solid polymers, yield and fracture, crazing
- Manufacturing with polymers, extrusion, injection-moulding
- Design/ processing interactions for plastic products
Re-assessment
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be re-assessed by exam. The re-assessment exam mark alone will be used to determine whether students satisfy progression requirements.
Target Students
The module is targeted towards Manufacturing Engineering UG, Mechanical Engineering UG, Product Design and Manufacturing, Mechanical Engineering MSc and Advanced Material MSc M3 students.
Assessment
- 25% Coursework 1: LO2, LO3, LO4
- 75% Exam 1 (2-hour): LO1, LO3, LO4
Assessed by end of autumn semester
Educational Aims
To ensure that students gain an understanding of the chemistry of polymers, the routes to polymerisation and their effect on the material; the rheology of polymer melts, the basics of the main polymer processing operations, and the interaction between rheology and processing; the mechanical properties of polymers and their influence on the design of polymeric products.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
LO1 - Apply core scientific and mathematical principles to the solution of polymer engineering problems. (AHEP 1)
LO2 - Employ the fundamental principles of polymer engineering to analyse and describe key stages in the design of a polymeric product, evaluating technical literature and data as appropriate. (AHEP 4)
LO3 - Identify and classify the performance of the major polymer groups, and the influence of manufacturing processes on structure and product performance. (AHEP 13)
LO4 - Describe the operating principles of polymer manufacturing processes, and determine the size and performance of processing equipment. (AHEP 3)
