Summary

This is a project-based module for final year Product Design and Manufacture students on the MEng programme. The module comprises of single Major design project, which develops and showcases the engineering and design skills that the student has developed throughout the duration of their programme. Through practical design work the students will be faced with the problems of managing different constraints and producing cohesive design proposals. The project will look in detail at the design solution and the manufacturing of the product.

Re-assessment
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be re-assessed in all failed assessment components. The re-assessment mark for the module will be a combination of the marks from components passed first time and the components which have been re-assessed.

Target Students

Students undertaking Product Design and Manufacture (MEng)

Assessment

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

Undertake an individual Major project, applying the knowledge, skills and process learnt throughout the Product Design and manufacture programme. Utilise knowledge of engineering, materials and manufacture, ergonomics and diverse users to create a commercially viable, innovative and manufacturable product solution.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

LO1 - Create an innovative design proposal by Analysing, synthesising and evaluating as an iterative process. Achieve a design solution that achieves its specified goals.  Consideration for a diverse group of users and the manufacturer should be given high importance. (AHEP 5,8)

LO2 - Evaluate materials and manufacturing constraints and consider their impact on design proposals. Address the issues of manufacture, commercial impact and sustainability. (AHEP 7,13)

LO3 - Manage project workload and Risks. Update plans to meet exacting deadlines. (AHEP 6)

LO4 - Communicate the project outcomes to a wide range of audiences both technical and non-technical (AHEP 13,17)

LO5 - Create an engineering report, detailing the analysis, manufacturing details and other relevant topics to validate the final design solution and its construction. (AHEP 3,4,7,17)

LO6 - Maintain and compile reflections in-action and reflections on-action as a method to record your self-learning and development (AHEP 18)
