Summary
An advanced module which covers topics aligned to the design, description and analysis of dynamically complex, integrated systems. Examples of such include automotive power trains, aero-engines and combined heat and power generating plant. Topics cover:
- Basic concepts in Design of Experiments and the analysis of experiments including the effects of noise
- Reliability of systems - reliability models for components and how these are combined to form system reliability assessments
- Dynamic behaviour of systems: introduction to the dynamic simulation of systems.
Emphasis throughout the course will be on real applications and tasks involved in the engineering of 'integrated systems' products.
Re-assessment:
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be re-assessed by exam. The re-assessment exam mark alone will be used to determine whether students satisfy progression requirements.
Target Students
Part III Mechanical Engineering MEng students for whom the module is compulsory.
Assessment
- 30% Coursework 1: Coursework 1 - 30%: LO2
- 70% Exam 1 (2-hour): Exam 1 - 70%: LO1, LO2, LO3
Assessed by end of autumn semester
Educational Aims
The module aims to equip students with the key skills essential to the engineering of successful systems. The module is motivated by the recognition that the processes and concerns associated with designing and validating systems are distinct from those connected with designing and validating components. It presents a sense of what “systems engineering” is about.Learning Outcomes
LO1 - Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of system behaviour and the design of experiments for characterising system components. - AHEP4: 2, 6
LO2 - Critically evaluate and analyse complex dynamic systems behaviour using an appropriate numerical or analytical methodology - AHEP4: 1, 2, 3, 6
LO3 - Evaluate the reliability of the separable system components, coupled system components and systems as a whole - AHEP4: 6, 9
