Summary
The lecture will focus contemporary issues in advanced engineering technology. Each leacturer will cover an engineering topic dealing with new and/or rapidly developing technologies with important applications. Coverage of each subject will typically include
- a review of background and context, importance, and pressures driving development
- engineering principles, current research and development objectives and progress being made
- case study illustration(s)
- analysis of prospects, technology transfer, market applications, challenges and imperatives
Topics are selected each year to reflect current developments and issues; one or more topics may be changed each time the module is run. These topics will be associated with activities in major segments of manufacturing or service industries or of generic technologies. In each case, emphasis will be placed on review and analysis. The courseworks entail a group case study on a new and/or rapidly advancing engineering technology of individual choice and two individual courseworks based on the lecture programme.
Re-assessment
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be re-assessed in all failed assessment components. The re-assessment mark for the module will be a combination of the marks from components passed first time and the components which have been re-assessed.
Target Students
Those Part III Mechanical Engineering MEng students for whom the module is compulsory. Passing Mark/Grade: 50% for UG MEng.
Classes
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 12 weeks
Assessment
- 30% Coursework 1: Individual coursework based on lectures
- 30% Coursework 2: Individual coursework based on lectures
- 40% Coursework 3: Case study poster
Educational Aims
This module exposes students to topics relevant to engineers today that are new and/or developing rapidly and which may be associated with important segments of the UK economy. The aim of the Case Study is to develop students’ skills in acquiring, assimilating, synthesising and presenting technical and business information in an appropriate form based on sound research.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
LO1 : Evaluate a company or business’ capability, identifying where additional capability is required and develop a research strategy appropriate for identified technology/information capability acquisition. (knowledge, evaluation and comprehension) – AHEP4: M2; EAC: PO2.
LO2 : Assimilate detailed information relating to a high level technical topic delivered through lecture format and create an appropriate short portfolio of information (lecture notes, self-sourced material). (application) – AHEP4: M4; EAC: PO4.
LO3 : Use a portfolio of information relating to a high level technical topic to deliver a reasoned, insightful and appropriate response to an externally posed question. (comprehension and analysis) – AHEP4: M18; EAC: PO11.
LO4 : Conduct a literature review to gather appropriate detailed information relating to a new or rapidly advancing technology including relevant factors from: market, political, environmental, societal, history, state-of the-art, future developments, future investment, exploitation, competition. (knowledge and evaluation) – AHEP4: M7; EAC: PO7.
LO5 : Write a professional standard Case Study Report that combines information from literature reviewed and presents an evidence-based analysis. (knowledge and evaluation) - AHEP4: M17; EAC: PO9.
