Summary

This is a project-based module for Product Design and Manufacture students in their 3rd year of the MEng course. The module comprises of 2 projects, developing a number of different themes that run through the discipline. Through practical design work the students will be faced with the problems of managing different constraints and producing cohesive design proposals. The students will develop their skills in receiving design briefs, managing time and resources, and presenting design solutions. The module has a particular focus towards the design of components for sheet metal processing, and an advanced understanding of users.

Re-assessment:
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be re-assessed by coursework. The reassessment mark for the module will be a combination of the marks from coursework passed first time and the coursework that has been re-assessed.

Target Students

Students undertaking Product Design and Manufacture (MEng)

Assessment

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

To further develop students’ ability in project based design work. In particular emphasising advanced skills in creative design and innovation, the process of design, the application of manufacturing materials and processes and good time / project management.

Learning Outcomes

LO1 - Identify, analyse and select research material appropriate for use in design work and present this in a clear and concise report. (AHEP 8,11)

LO2 - Synthesise and propose a range of new and innovative design solutions to a clearly defined design problem. (AHEP 5)

LO3 - Critically review materials and manufacturing processes to determine component and assembly detail and overall product costings. (AHEP 13)

LO4 - Organise, plan, and manage project workload and timescales to meet exacting deadlines.  (AHEP 15)

LO5 - Illustrate and communicate design solutions clearly and effectively with technical and non-technical audiences in an appropriate level of detail, evaluating the effectiveness of the methods used. (AHEP 17)

LO6 - Use workshop skills to create, design and test fitness for manufacture in Product Design. (AHEP 12)

LO7 – Evaluate design proposals using mathematical and statistical analysis techniques relevant to human factors engineering approach. Gather empirical data from observation and experimentation, and analysis, describe and understand these data to inform design development. (AHEP 2)
