Summary
An advanced module that builds on the student experience of CAD modelling and analysis techniques introduced in MMME1024 and developed in the students second year of study. Module is delivered 'flipped classroom' with students completing weekly exercises while under the support of an experience team of CAE users. This approach allows students to develop at their own pace and receive targeted individual support. Materials include various solid & surface modelling, rendering, Finite Element Analysis, Design studies and optimisation.
Target Students
Restricted optional for BEng/MEng Mechanical Engineering and optional for Product Design and Manufacture programmes. MSc students with prerequisite CAE knowledge may also take the module with the consent of the module convener and course director. There is a limited number of places on this module. Students are reminded that enrolments which are not agreed by the Offering School in advance may be cancelled without notice.
Classes
Students will be expected to make use of the computer laboratories to complete work outside the timetabled classes.
Assessment
- 100% Coursework 1
Assessed by end of autumn semester
Educational Aims
To provide students with some advanced practical CAE skills particularly for use in project work and industry. Also to provide students with an awareness of the computational tools available for use within the design process.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
LO1 - Apply core engineering and mathematical principles to evaluate CAE system analyses and appreciate their limitations.
LO2 - Identify data sources, extract and synthesise data from various sources to create complex models and analyses.
LO3 - Identify and critically evaluate CAE tools and techniques.
LO4 - Understand and appreciate the principles of design intent and design process within the context of CAE.
LO5 - Justify and communicate techniques selected for model generation and analysis.
LO6 - Provide visualisations as computer models and renderings of a product, component or system. (IED outcome).
It is anticipated that students will also develop skills in and be assessed on:
- Preparation of technical reports
- Delivery of technical presentations
- Effective communication
- Effective use of general IT tools
- Adopting a scientific approach to problem solving
- Independent learning and a critical approach in investigation
