Summary

For each of the following subject areas, the historical evolution of design of the component is considered with regard to the influences of performance optimisation, cost, and legislative requirements:

Re-assessment
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be re-assessed by exam. The re-assessment exam mark alone will be used to determine whether students satisfy progression requirements.

Target Students

M3 courses.

Assessment

Assessed by end of autumn semester

Educational Aims

The aim of this module is to provide students with the knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of automotive engineering. The module also develops the appreciation of the economic and legislative influences on the design of a modern automobile.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

LO1 - Comprehend the fundamental knowledge of scientific principles, technological developments and industrial practices in areas related to vehicle design, performance, manufacturing, legislation and environment (knowledge and comprehension).

LO2 - Apply the fundamental knowledge and understanding to the analysis of vehicle performance such as powertrain, suspension systems and body structures (application).

LO3 - Analyse critically all the different aspects of vehicle systems, which includes key issues such as environmental and sustainability limitations and crashworthiness legislation (analysis).

LO4 - Formulate appropriate scientific methods/models to interpret and analyse problems within the context of automotive engineering (synthesis).

LO5 - Appraise solutions to automotive engineering problems using an appropriate level of explanation, showing evidence of judgement in selection of analysis techniques (evaluation).
