Summary
This module introduces students to Design projects. Students shall be presented design briefs that have complex problems, and through the application of a design process, present solutions to these briefs. These solutions will consider a broad range of requirements such as user and commercial needs, and will require the application of manufacturing knowledge to produce viable products.
Re-assessment: Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be re-assessed by coursework. The re-assessment mark for the module will be a combination of the marks from coursework passed first time and the coursework which have been re-assessed.
Target Students
Students undertaking Product Design and Manufacture.
Assessment
- 40% Coursework 1: CW1 - Design project 1 (8 Credits) (Module LO1, LO2, LO3, LO6)
- 60% Coursework 2: CW2 - Design project 2 (12 Credits) (Module LO2, LO4, LO5, LO6)
Assessed by end of autumn semester
Educational Aims
To introduce students to project based design work and project-based learning. Provide students with an awareness of basic design skills and their application in solving design problems. Practice the selection and application of manufacturing materials and processes.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
LO1 - Understand the needs of an end user and evaluate a design solution against these. (AHEP 11)
LO2 - Identify and apply a design process to explore and resolve a complex design problem. (AHEP 5)
LO3 - Create a design that considers a range of user, societal and business needs, and ensure the solution is fit for a variety of diverse users. (AHEP 5)
LO4 - Apply material and processes knowledge to select appropriate manufacturing methods, considering the environmental impact of these choices. (AHEP 13)
LO5 - Effectively justify and communicate a design solution and its selection criteria, to both technical and non-technical audiences. (AHEP 17)
LO6 – Maintain and compile reflections in-action and reflections on-action as a method to record your self-learning and development (AHEP 18)
