Summary

This module will give students experience of design principles associated with manufacturing processes. The lecture material will cover design for manufacture tools and techniques focusing on processes for high volume, low value production. Key processes such as injection moulding will cover basic design constraints and tooling and assembly techniques.

Re-assessment
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be re-assessed by exam. The re-assessment exam mark alone will be used to determine whether students satisfy progression requirements.

Target Students

Students undertaking Product Design and Manufacture.

Assessment

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

The aim of this module is to develop knowledge, understanding and practical skills in Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and CAD-CAM techniques and tools for Manufacturing and Product Development. It covers design for manufacturability, design for assembly and knowledge of polymer and metal production techniques in addition to Additive Manufacturing and rapid prototyping for the purposes of product and tooling development.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

LO1 -Understand the fundamental DFM techniques and tools in all stages of the product development process (knowledge and comprehension). (AHEP 14)

LO2 -Understand the impact on cost, quality and time of design for key high volume manufacturing techniques. (AHEP 14)

LO3 -Have a basic understanding of a range high volume manufacturing techniques for metals, polymers and other materials. (AHEP 13,16)

LO4- Apply DFM techniques for various manufacturing processes (comprehension, application). (AHEP 6)

LO5 - Use technical information and engineering tools to control and analyse manufacturing processes and demonstrate how this approach can enable a detailed evaluation of manufacturing techniques. (AHEP 3,4)
