Summary
This module will provide: An introduction to Industrial Design, a brief history of its leading practitioners, its impact on popular culture, the role of the designer and ethical responsibilities, design methodology and design project case studies.
The module will also contain: Teaching sessions on high volume production methods, CAD and associated software.
Re-assessment
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be re-assessed by coursework. The reassessment mark for the module will be a combination of the marks from coursework passed first time and the coursework that has been re-assessed.

Students undertaking Product Design and Manufacture.

- 35% Coursework 1: CW1 - Walkthrough Design Project (7 Credits) (Module LO1, LO3, LO4, LO5)
- 35% Coursework 2: CW2 - 1st Year Design Portfolio (7 Credits) (Module LO4, LO6)
- 30% Exam 1 (2-hour): Exam1 (6 credits) (Module LO1, LO2, LO7)

Educational Aims
The aim of this module is to introduce students to the profession of industrial design, including the processes and techniques used by industrial designers.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
LO1 - Understand the fundamental principles of industrial design (AHEP 7,8,10)
LO2 - Understand and describe the contexts and theories relevant to the industrial designer's field. (AHEP 15)
LO3 - Research and critically evaluate technical literature to inform and solve creative design problems (AHEP4)
LO4 - Conduct and apply creative thinking and problem-solving skills through the staged processes typically used in professional Industrial Design projects. (AHEP 5,6,18)
LO5 - Recognise the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion within the process of creative design (AHEP 11)
LO6 - Understand the fundamentals of graphic design and apply these to communicate effectively. (AHEP 17)
LO7 - Understand typical security risks present within the field of Industrial Design and suggest mitigations to these risks. (AHEP 10)
