Summary
Students are introduced to practice and theory to translate a range of text types including but not limited to literary, technical and operational texts. Translation approaches and relevant theoretical perspectives are introduced to cultivate translation competence. Students explore different text types and the theoretical perspectives on which translation approaches are based. Through building up a portfolio of translations, students are encouraged to reflect on key issues and challenges in a professional setting via a series of learning activities, including simulation group project, presentation and translation exam.
Target Students
Students on MA in Translation Studies, MA in Translation and Localisation, MA in Chinese/English Translation and Interpreting.
Assessment
- 30% In-Class Exam: In-class translation 500 words.
- 40% Project 1: Translation Portfolio includes 3 pieces of translation each approximately 300 words, plus 500 word translation commentary.
- 30% Project 2: Group translation project 1,500 words.

Educational Aims
This module will enable students to combine translation theory and practice through workshops to maximise skills development. Workshops focus on different text types where relevant critical and genre-specific approaches are introduced. The aim is to cultivate translation competence through theory-informed approaches. This module will prepare students for life as a language professional and/or translation practitioner with awareness of professional practice and norms.Learning Outcomes
