Summary

This module will allow students to acquire skills and knowledge of community interpreting between English and Chinese. The module focuses on different aspects of community interpreting and covers the mode of communication in different settings. Techniques and cultural awareness are to be developed to work with professionals and clients from different backgrounds. The module will be delivered in the form of workshop to maximise the amount of practice for students. The linguistic, technical, and cultural specificities of community interpreting will be explored in detail.

Target Students

Only available for students on the MA in Chinese/English Translation and Interpreting.

Educational Aims

The aim is to enable students to provide professional community interpreting service upon the completion of this module. They will be equipped with the latest understanding of this particular genre in some of the most challenging applications and an advanced set of skills required.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding
This module develops a knowledge and understanding of:
       A1 knowledge and understanding of Bi-Lateral interpreting as the pre-dominant genre of consecutive interpreting between English and Chinese
      

 A2 knowledge and understanding of the key concepts related to this activity - the dynamics at play, the relationship between the interpreter, the client, the agency, the speaker, and many others involved
 

  A3 enriched knowledge and understanding of the lexis, structures and functions of English
      

  A4 understanding of the special requirements – linguistic, translational, interpersonal, cultural dimensions
      

   A5 inter-cultural awareness of social and situational issues
      

   A6 knowledge and understanding of technological tools for translation
       

 A7 ability and adaptability required to work with fellow interpreters
 

A8 knowledge and understanding of the key parameters or Rules of Engagement including ethical issues
       

        A9 knowledge and understanding of the business cycle of a professional community interpreter

Teaching and learning of A1-9 are achieved through a series of workshops, practical classes and self-directed study. Assessment is via recorded oral exams.
