Summary
1. Studies on accuracy of grammar on times and changes, and connectors and discourse markers in spoken and written Chinese
2. Vocabulary related to physical features, personalities, human social behaviours, economic developments and basic statistics
3. Language functions for relating experiences, describing physical features, making generalisations, defining historic personalities and celebrities and describing changes, etc.
Target Students
Available to exchange students who spend one semester here at UoN based on an assessment by tutors to check level of competency.
Classes
- Two 2-hour seminars each week for 11 weeks
- One 1-hour practicum each week for 11 weeks
Activities takes place every teaching week of the Semester. At least six hours of self-study per week is expected from students on the learning materials given in class, on moodle and recommended websites. A conversation practice is also available weekly.
Assessment
- 30% Coursework 1: Multi-skilled assignments or projects.
- 20% Oral Exam: In class presentation
- 40% Inclass Exam: 2 hour Exam with questions on reading comprehension, vocabulary, translation and essay.
- 10% Participation: Preparation and engagement.

Educational Aims
The aim of this module is to build on the practical language experiences gained previously, to consolidate and extend vocabulary, to increase comprehension, to reinforce grammatical accuracy and to develop a fluent command of written and spoken Mandarin Chinese.Learning Outcomes
Language knowledge and competencies:
- Learners are expected to use right levels of vocabulary and sentence structures to discuss a range of issues and themes relevant to an understanding of contemporary China such as food culture, studying in China, young people and how they spend their free time, celebrities, social customs, marriage and relationships etc.
- Learners are expected to understand and engage in daily news discussion in target language.
Cultural knowledge:
- Learners are expected to compare cultural differences between Chinese culture and their own cultures and to raise their cultural awareness and intercultural competence.
Employability skills:
- Learners are able to develop their professional competencies such as presentation, collaboration, critical thinking, problem solving and reflection etc through in-class and out-class learning activities.
