Summary
This module will introduce students to the medieval period in the history of the East Slavs, covering pre-Christian times to the Mongol conquests and beyond. Through lectures and workshops, we will explore political, cultural and social developments, with a particular emphasis on working with primary sources in various media (texts, painting, architecture).

Available for second-year students in MLC, second-year students in the Faculty of Arts andExchange students.
Classes
- One 2-hour seminar each week for 11 weeks
- One 1-hour lecture each week for 11 weeks
The module will consist of a weekly Lecture (1hr per week) and weekly seminars (2hrs per week). Lecture to precede seminar.
Assessment
- 60% Coursework 1: 3000 word essay
- 40% Inclass Exam 1 (Written): 1 hour online test

Educational Aims
Students will gain an understanding of the early history of Rus, the development of the society, politics and culture of the East Slavs, and their relations with their neighbours. Students will read a selection of primary sources in translation and learn to assess them as historical evidence. They will also learn about basic trends in the historiography of this period and how it has been manipulated for various political purposes in modern times.Learning Outcomes
