Summary
This module will build on the German language and cultural skills you developed in year one and get you started on your exciting journey towards degree-level German. We're going to take you to the next level and by the end of this module you'll be ready to spend time living in a German-speaking country.
We'll focus on getting you confident in your German reading, writing, listening and speaking abilities. In addition, we will develop translation skills into and out of the target language. In class we'll keep your studies interesting and relevant by using a variety of contemporary texts, including journalistic articles, videos, clips from TV programmes and news items.
Target Students
Only available for Year 2 students of German and other students who have completed MLAC1103 German 1.

Classes
- One 2-hour workshop each week for 20 weeks
- One 1-hour practicum each week for 20 weeks

Assessment
- 10% Coursework 1: Writing task into L2 (350-400 words) Autumn semester
- 20% Coursework 2: Writing task into L1 (350-400 words) and grammar exercises - Autumn semester
- 20% Oral Exam: 10 mins - Spring semester
- 10% Listening Exam: Spring semester
- 10% Coursework 3: Short writing tasks into L1 and L2 (350-400 words) - Spring semester.
- 30% Exam 1 (2-hour)

Educational Aims
This module aims to take you to a level of proficiency commensurate with B2/C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference. As such, you will be able to communicate effectively in written and oral German by mobilizing the grammatical and lexical knowledge and discourse awareness necessary to achieve this.In terms of comprehension, you will be able to understand the main ideas in written, audio and audio-visual texts produced for native German speakers, on a range of topics relevant to living, studying and/or working in a German-speaking country. In addition to obtaining B2/C1 levels of competence in German comprehension and expression, you will further develop linguistic mediation skills in areas such as translation and summary.Learning Outcomes
A. Knowledge and understanding:
• Understand spoken and written German language at a level commensurate with B2/C1 of the CEFR (A1).
• Demonstrate declarative and procedural knowledge of the key elements of German grammar, lexis and discourse appropriate to effective performance of written and spoken tasks at B2/C1 Level of the CEFR (A1).
• Demonstrate awareness and understanding of the differences and similarities between the German and the English language (A4) as well as between the societies and cultures of the German speaking world and their own (A5).
B. Intellectual skills:
• Gather, process and evaluate information from a variety of paper, audio-visual and electronic sources in English and German (B1).
• The development of the ability to engage in exchanges of ideas with others, giving due weight to their opinions (B7).
C. Professional skills:
• Make effective use of grammar books and dictionaries (C5, C4)
• Present language work in an accurate and appropriate manner for specific tasks (C5, C6).
• Ability to translate texts derived from a variety of media into and out of German with a degree of accuracy commensurate with B2/C1 of the CEFR.
D. Transferable skills:
• Organise and manage working time, schedule tasks and meet deadlines (D7)
• Write and think productively under pressure (in examination conditions) (D5).
• Demonstrate ability to work independently and in groups (D3, D4).
• Use IT effectively as an aid to learning (D8).
