Summary
This module concentrates on revising the basic skills acquired during previous study and aims to further develop students' oral and written communicative ability in the Mandarin Chinese language in more complex situations. The Mandarin Chinese language will be used as much as possible in class.
Target Students
Available to Exchange students based on an assessment by tutors to check level of competency.
Classes
- One 2-hour practicum each week for 11 weeks
- Two 2-hour lectures each week for 11 weeks
Assessment
- 30% Coursework 1: To cover Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading and Writing.
- 60% In Class Exam: To cover oral and writing.
- 10% Participation: Preparation and engagement

Educational Aims
The overall aim of the module is to produce students who develop further competence in the four skills of the Mandarin Chinese language: listening, speaking, reading and writing, together with more complex grammatical structures.Learning Outcomes
A. Knowledge and understanding:
- Students will be familiar with the Mandarin Chinese language structure at intermediate level. They will further develop the following skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
B. Intellectual skills:
- On completing this course, students should be able to manipulate the language with the skills they have acquired: listening, speaking, reading and writing, together with grammatical structures at the intermediate level.
C. Professional practical skills:
- Students will acquire the skills necessary to cover topics both orally and in written form in the Mandarin Chinese language.
D. Transferable (key) skills:
- Use of language laboratory facilities
- Use of dictionaries
- Pair and group work
- Oral presentation
- Essay writing
- Cultural and transcultural awareness.
