Summary

This module will build on the French language and cultural skills you developed in year one and get you started on your exciting journey towards degree-level French. We're going to take your language skills to the next level and by the end of this module you'll be ready to spend time living in a French-speaking country.

We'll push you to improve your confidence in reading comprehension, listening comprehension and oral skills. In addition to this you'll get the opportunity to develop your French writing skills through a variety of tasks such as creative writing, summary writing and even resume writing. You'll also practice translation activities.

We'll keep your studies interesting and relevant by using a variety of contemporary texts including journalistic articles and audio-visual clips.

Target Students

Core language module for all UG students reading SH, JH and CH degrees with French; available to subsidiary and Liberal Arts students who have taken MLAC1150.

Additional Requirements

A level 1 language module or equivalent. Also available for Exchange students

Classes

THREE hours per week. One 2-hour language class (workshop) weekly and one 1-hour oral class (practical) weekly per student. Educational Aims

This module aims to take you to a level of proficiency commensurate with B2/C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference. As such, you will be able to communicate effectively in written and oral French by mobilizing the grammatical and lexical knowledge and discourse awareness necessary to achieve this. In terms of comprehension, you will be able to understand the main ideas in written, audio and audio-visual texts produced for native French speakers, on a range of topics relevant to living, studying and/or working in a French-speaking country. In addition to obtaining B2/C1 levels of competence in French comprehension and expression, you will further develop linguistic mediation skills in areas such as translation and summary.

Learning Outcomes

A. Knowledge and understanding:

• Understand spoken and written French language at a level commensurate with B2/C1 of the CEFR (A1).

• Demonstrate declarative and procedural knowledge of the key elements of French grammar, lexis and discourse appropriate to effective performance of written and spoken tasks at B2/C1 Level of the CEFR (A1).

• Demonstrate awareness and understanding of the differences and similarities between the French and the English language (A4) as well as between the societies and cultures of the French speaking world and their own (A5).

B. Intellectual skills:

• Gather, process and evaluate information from a variety of paper, audio-visual and electronic sources in English and French (B1).

• The development of the ability to engage in exchanges of ideas with others, giving due weight to their opinions (B7).

C. Professional skills:

• Make effective use of grammar books and dictionaries (C5, C4).

• Present language work in an accurate and appropriate manner for specific tasks (C5, C6).

• Ability to translate texts derived from a variety of media into and out of French with a degree of accuracy commensurate with B2/C1 of the CEFR.

D. Transferable skills:

• Organise and manage working time, schedule tasks and meet deadlines (D7).

• Write and think productively under pressure (in examination conditions) (D5).

• Demonstrate ability to work independently and in groups (D3, D4).

• Use IT effectively as an aid to learning (D8).
