Summary
This module is designed to take students from ab-initio level (absolute beginners) to a level of written and aural comprehension and of written and oral expression roughly commensurate with level A2.1 of the Common European Framework of Reference.
Target Students
Only available for Exchange students registered with SPLAS.
Classes
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 11 weeks
- One 2-hour seminar each week for 11 weeks
- One 1-hour lecture each week for 11 weeks
MOBILITY AND JYA/ERASMUS STUDENTS ONLY. One semester of MLAC1060. DO NOT TIMETABLE. There will be 4 hours of tuition per week on this module. The School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies operates an attendance policy. The details of this policy can be found in the student handbook on Workspace and in module handbooks
Assessment
- 60% Inclass Exam 1 (Practical): Written assessment (1 hour)
- 40% Inclass Exam 2 (Practical): Oral assessment (1 hour)

Educational Aims
This module aims to take students with no previous knowledge of Spanish to a level roughly commensurate with A2.1 level of the CEFR. They will cover basic grammar and will learn the basic vocabulary of everyday communication. They should be able to function, at a basic level, in a Spanish-language environment by the end of the course.Learning Outcomes
Students will understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
They will be able to introduce themselves and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know and things they have.
They can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
