Summary
Welcome to Spanish at the University of Nottingham — this is where your journey to Spanish fluency shall really begin to take off!
Designed for students who have completed an A level in the language, this module will support you to improve in all the key areas of language acquisition: reading, writing, listening and speaking. To keep the classes interesting and relevant we'll use a wide range of source material from newspapers, audio-visual content and websites.
Through this, not only will your speaking and comprehension skills improve, but also your grammar usage and ability to understand the language in different contexts.
You'll also become more culturally aware of the countries that make up the Spanish-speaking world and get a better understanding of their varying current affairs and cultures.
Target Students
Only available to Level 1 SH, JH or CH students that involve post A-Level Spanish. Also available to Liberal Arts students who have an A-level in Spanish.
Classes
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 20 weeks

Assessment
- 40% Assignment 1: 2 x writing task into L1 and 1 x online participation
- 20% Oral Exam: Oral exam - 10 mins Spring semester
- 40% Exam 1 (2-hour)

Educational Aims
This module aims to take you to a level of proficiency commensurate with B1/B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference. As such, you will be able to communicate effectively in written and oral Spanish by mobilizing the grammatical and lexical knowledge and discourse awareness necessary to achieve this. In terms of comprehension, you will be able to understand the main ideas in written, audio and audio-visual texts produced for native Spanish speakers, on a range of topics. In addition to obtaining B1/2 levels of competence in Spanish comprehension and expression, you will develop linguistic mediation skills in areas such as translation and summary.Learning Outcomes
A. Knowledge and understanding:
• Understand spoken and written Spanish language at a level commensurate with B1/B2 of the CEFR (A1).
• Demonstrate declarative and procedural knowledge of the key elements of Spanish grammar, lexis and discourse appropriate to effective performance of written and spoken tasks at B1/B2 Level of the CEFR (A1).
• Demonstrate awareness and understanding of the differences and similarities between the Spanish and the English language (A4) as well as between the societies and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world and their own (A5).
B. Intellectual skills:
• Gather, process and evaluate information from a variety of paper, audio-visual and electronic sources in English and Spanish (B1).
• The development of the ability to engage in exchanges of ideas with others, giving due weight to their opinions (B7).
C. Professional skills:
• Make effective use of grammar books and dictionaries (C5, C4)
• Present language work in an accurate and appropriate manner for specific tasks (C5, C6).
• Ability to translate texts derived from a variety of media into and out of Spanish with a degree of accuracy commensurate with B1/B2 of the CEFR.
D. Transferable skills:
• Organise and manage working time, schedule tasks and meet deadlines (D7)
• Write and think productively under pressure (in examination conditions) (D5).
• Demonstrate ability to work independently and in groups (D3, D4).
• Use IT effectively as an aid to learning (D8).
