Summary
This module assumes no prior knowledge of the language. It introduces the basic structure of the language through topics relating to social and everyday life in the countries where the target language is spoken. Each session will consist of a variety of activities arising from the themes and structures which underpin the course programme. Students are also required to undertake a programme of autonomous learning.
Target Students
Beginner level in the target language: native speakers or graduates of their mother/father tongue language secondary schools are not advised to take. This module is open to all students provided their home department approves. If pre-requisite knowledge is assumed, the offering school reserves the right to check qualifications with home departments and move students to a more appropriate level if possible.Note: all Year 1 Inter-Faculty language modules are subject to being closed (by the end of Add & Drop) if the enrolment is below 5 students..
Classes
- One 3-hour lecture each week for 12 weeks
Assessment
- 30% In Class Test: In class Coursework - Once a semester: Listening (30 mins)
- 30% Speaking Task: Group Speaking Task (Q&A)
- 40% Written Exam: Reading comprehension (AUT semester) (1 hour)

Students will learn and practice the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing together with basic grammatical structures. This will enable them to manipulate the language and participate effectively in everyday social situationsLearning Outcomes
