Summary

This course considers:

a) Evidence-based care and midwifery clinical skills including interpersonal skills; 
b) Promotion of universal midwifery care;
c) The midwife’s professional role including autonomy and accountability;
d) Effective communication in midwifery; 
e) Introduction to parent education; 
f) The initiation and continuation of breast feeding; 
g) Participation in antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care across a range of clinical settings; 
h) Continuity of care and carer including case-holding and compassionate midwifery care; 
i) Fetal monitoring and interpretation; 
j) Practice of neonatal and maternal resuscitation; 
k) Reflection in and on practice; 
l) Principles of pharmacology, medicines management and administration

200 hours of learning delivered by a variety of methods, including self-directed study

Educational Aims

To introduce the student midwife to the care of the childbearing woman, the neonate and the family.

Safely participate in the provision of universal care alongside midwives and other health and social care practitioners, under direct supervision.
 

Demonstrate professional behaviour and conduct in line with The NMC Code and NHS Values. 

Utilise appropriate evidence to underpin midwifery universal care, relating knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
 

Transferable Skills

Demonstrate effective communication skills using a variety of methods
