Summary
This broad module provides the generic transferrable, professional and scientific skills for studying science and for building upon in the MPT programme. Its content is diverse and includes basic transferrable skills (eg information literacy, effective use of technology and digital sources, and scientific communication) and those underpinning research in MPT (eg basic principles of mathematics and statistics: data handling and basic statistical analysis of experimental data and graphical presentation). Examples of contemporary medical research and careers/employability opportunities in this area are also included.
Target Students
Students on the Qualifying Year of the BSc Medical Physiology and Therapeutics
Classes
Delivery will be by a combination of lectures/tutorials/practical classes, group-work and self-directed learning. Core staff, the University Careers and Library Services are integral to delivery
Assessment
- 50% Coursework 1: Completed portfolio (1,250 words) with staggered assessments (submitted over semesters 1 and 2)
- 50% Exam 1 (1-hour): MCQ Exam
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
The aim of the module is to give students a good foundation in transferrable academic and study skills, numeracy skills and statistics to build upon as studies progress in the Medical Physiology and Therapeutics course. It introduces essential aspects needs for research including good experimental study design, ethical considerations and communication skills as a broad base for future research. The need to develop full academic potential is encouraged through independent-learning, and reinforced via formative assessment activities and personal tutor input.Learning Outcomes
the UoN student support services (e.g. personal tutors, careers services, advantage awards) and related essential Divisional processes (e.g. extenuating circumstances, absence recording) for successful academic transition
information literacy – how to use UNLOC, literature searching, evaluation, citation of and referencing sources (Harvard and Vancouver)
Academic professionalism academic deceit and avoiding plagiarism
science communication and conventional academic styles (e.g. lab reports, essays, presentations)
differences between quantitative and qualitative scientific research methods
the basics of good experimental design
using basic appropriate summary statistics for comparing data e.g. t-tests and data presentation in appropriate formats (e.g. tables, graphs or spreadsheets)
scientific numeracy and familiarity with calculations using e.g. different units, concentrations
broad examples in contemporary medical physiology and therapeutic research including diversity of topic (e.g. public health and evidence-based medicine and issues faced (e.g introductory ethical considerations)
employability in the medical physiology and therapeutics arena
use UoN resources and library search engines to source appropriate information on specific topics
solve simple problems using basic mathematics (e.g. calculating concentrations)
learn digital capabilities to perform and interpret simple descriptive statistical analysis and present data appropriately (e.g. plot graphs)
independent study skills to support life-long learning and professional development
good interpersonal skills
develop academic writing skills
learning how to search for relevant information from the scientific literature and promote independent learning
Basic reflective practice and the use of feedback and feedforward
