Summary
Kidney disease is relatively common and its incidence is increasing because of the ageing population and increases in the incidence of obesity, diabetes mellitus and hypertension. This module focuses on the pathology and treatment of kidney diseases. There will be 2 lectures giving an overview of renal function and measurements, 4 presentations/workshops/review sessions detailing the pathology, assessment and management of renal diseases (such as glomerular disease, renal vascular disease, nephrotic syndrome and chronic kidney disease) and a tutorial.
Target Students
BMedSci A100, A10S or BSc (Medical Sciences) (A104) students only. There is a limited number of places on this module. Students are reminded that enrolments which are not agreed by the Offering School in advance may be cancelled without notice.
Classes
- Two 2-hour lectures each week for 2 weeks
- One 1-hour lecture each week for 2 weeks
Activities consist of lectures, student presentations (not assessed) and a review session. Please refer to the module timetable online for up to date information on contact hours.

- 100% Coursework 1: Maximum 2000 words

Educational Aims

These are detailed in the Module Learning Outcomes.During MEDS3052 students will be building on previous learning and acquiring knowledge, skills and attitudes required for assessment and management of patients with a core spectrum of clinical presentations and conditions in relation to an understanding of the basis and treatment of kidney diseases.This will predominantly be within an overview of renal structure and function, the clinical features of, and diagnostic tools used in, kidney disease, the pathology, assessment and management of kidney diseases such as glomerular disease, vascular disease, nephrotic syndrome, and chronic kidney disease.There is a requirement for students to undertake private study. It will be essential to demonstrate appropriate professional attitudes and behaviour.Learning Outcomes
