Summary
This module enables students to experience contemporary research methods by engaging them to design a research programme and perform experiments, surveys, or other research activities aimed at solving a specific biomedical problem. They will collect, analyse and interpret data, read and collate previous results relevant to their problem, write a clear and concise report and will discuss their work with academic members of staff in a viva. This module is both Faculty wide and homebase-dependent. The form of project may vary and it may be based on laboratory work, audit, patient studies or a systematic literature review. The principal activities will be completion of the practical work and submission of a final report in the form of one of the following: a dissertation, audit report or systematic literature review.

Students registered on the A100 BMedSci, A10S BMedSci and A104 BSc Medical Sciences
Classes
This module is both Faculty wide and homebase-dependent. Students are assigned to a project and be expected to meet for supervisons by a member of academic staff as determined by the homebase.
Assessment
- 80% Dissertation 1: Project write-up: up to a maximum of 10,000 words
- 20% Poster Presentation 1: Poster Presentation (20 mins)

Educational Aims
This module is designed so that students can attain some of the outcomes specified by the GMC in Outcomes for Graduates (2018) in the areas of Professional values and behaviours; Professional skills; and Professional knowledge. These are detailed in the Module Learning Outcomes.During the Research Project students will be building on previous learning and acquiring knowledge, skills and attitudes that link to aspects of the outcomes for graduate specified in Tomorrow’s Doctors by the GMC.Work will predominantly be within homebases linked to a school. Students are assigned to a project and be expected to meet for supervision by a member of academic staff as determined by the homebase.The form of project may vary and it may be based on laboratory work, audit, patient studies or a systematic literature review.
