Summary

In this course a substantial investigation will be carried out on a topic in Statistics or Probability. The study will be largely self-directed, although a supervisor will provide oversight and input where necessary. The topic will be chosen by agreement between the student and supervisor. The topic could be based on the statistical analysis of a substantial dataset, an investigation into statistical methodology or an investigation into a topic of applied probability or probability theory. It is expected that most projects will contain an element of statistical computing.

Target Students

Students taking MSc in Statistics, MSc in Statistics and Applied Probability, MSc Statistics with Machine Learning in the School of Mathematical Sciences.

Classes

Weekly (approximately) meeting with supervisor.

Assessment

Assessed by end of summer vacation

Educational Aims

The purpose of thiscourse is to broaden and deepen the students' knowledge and understanding of statistics or probability by carrying out a detailed and substantial investigation. Students will acquire knowledge and skills of relevance to a professional and/or research statistician. Research experience will be broadened considerably by undertaking this independent but supervised work, summarising the analysis and findings in a written dissertation and discussing their investigation in a viva.

Learning Outcomes

A student who completes this course successfully will be able to:

L1 - model a substantial problem related to statistics or applied probability, and performrelated numerical and analytical computations;

L2 - search and review relevant literature and other resources where appropriate;

L3 - relate theoretical models to their statistical applications;

L4 - present results in written and oral form to a mixed audience of experts and general statisticians/probabilists;

L5 - communicate results using appropriate styles, conventions and terminology.
