Summary
Students will gain grounding in planning, preparing and executing research in the field of molecular biology, microbiology immunology and genetics. They will learn how to plan research projects, assess published literature, analyse data and gain experience presenting research data and preparing publications, with an emphasis on the critical analysis of statistical methods.
Target Students
MSc Clinical Microbiology (Distance Learning)
Classes
This module may be delivered through lectures, seminars, workshops and labs etc
Assessment
- 100% Report: Report, 100.00, Review article of published articles describing a specific gene of interest (1000 word written report, 4 weeks allocated for preparation and writing), with emphasis on statistical analysis.
Assessed by end of designated period
Educational Aims
To gain understanding of the fundamentals of laboratory research, including research study design, execution of research, interpretation/presentation of research data, and statistical analysis. To encourage independent thinking about approaches to designing laboratory research.Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and Understanding: Knowledge of the preparation and planning of laboratory research. Read diligently and interpret effectively the approaches required to construct a successful molecular biology experiment. Acquire information systemically, process it effectively and draw appropriate conclusions. Process published data and make critical assessment of the quality of research.
Professional Practical Skills: Understand how research funding applications are prepared. Understand the technicality of preparation of scientific manuscripts. Discuss inferences generated and apply them to wider concepts.
Transferable skills: Effective written and spoken communication. Organize and manage the working time. Use and access Communication and Information
Technology. Reflect on and assess progress, strengths and drawbacks. Work productively within a team.
