Summary

This module will facilitate an understanding of antimicrobial therapies for the control of infection and disease. This will encompass study of the action of specific antimicrobial compounds, mechanisms of resistance and the development of preventative and therapeutic vaccines.

Target Students

Priority to students on the MSc in Clinical and Molecular Microbiology. It can be taken as a ‘stand-alone’ module for CPD purposes.

Classes

This module may be delivered through lectures, seminars, workshops and labs etc

Assessment

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

This module will facilitate an understanding of antimicrobial therapies for the control of infection and disease. This will encompass study of the action of specific antimicrobial compounds, mechanisms of resistance and the development of preventative and therapeutic vaccines.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge of key human infections, with particular emphasis on medically important bacteria, fungi and parasites.

Describe the different mechanisms associated with disease pathogenesis for key bacteria, fungi and parasites.

Describe the action and use of specific antimicrobial compounds, mechanisms of resistance and the development of preventative and therapeutic agents and vaccines.

Have knowledge of current methods of antimicrobial discovery and structure based drug design.

Ability to assimilate information from a variety of sources.

Effectively communicate microbiology and molecular biology theory and techniques.

Use a variety of C & IT application’s including internet and intranet databases, statistical packages, image capture, enhancement and handling, spreadsheets, report preparation (DTP) and multimedia presentations.

In addition, students will use a range of specialist biotechnology / molecular biology software packages.
