Summary
The module aims to give an overview on the quality assurance processes and techniques used in analysing body fluids and tissues, that are fundamental in patient care. Student will also learn about various diseases that have high prevalence in Malaysia, their diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and prognosis. Case study on blood substance abuse will be discussed.
Target Students
Compulsory for all students registered for the Single Honours degree in Biomedical Sciences with or without another subject and other students subject to approval.
Classes
- One 2-hour un assigned
- Two 1-hour lectures each week for 9 weeks
- One 7-hour field studies
Assessment
- 20% Coursework 1: Coursework on alcohol metabolism (1,500 - 2,000 word)
- 80% Exam (2-hour): 2 hr written exam

Educational Aims
The module blends essential basic science with insights into laboratory practice to show how an understanding of the biology of disease is coupled to analytical approaches, leading to diagnosis, treatment, disease monitoring and prognosis.Learning Outcomes
1) To discuss the quality assurance processes and methods used on clinical samples that will be subjected to biochemical analysis
2) To describe the biochemical basis for various diseases, their diagnosis, treatment, therapeutic monitoring and prognosis
3) To evaluate the given blood profiles on substance abuse through report writing
