Summary
Students will gain an understanding of the process of taking a drug through pre-clinical testing and licencing. As part of this, students will be introduced to toxicology. Related to this, students will learn how pharmacology impacts on patient care with respect to the safe and effective use of medicines.
The form of reassessment of the module will be just the exam.
Target Students
Year 3 BSc Pharmacology studentsU6UPHCLG (B211)
Co-requisites
Modules you must take in the same academic year, or have taken in a previous year, to enrol in this module:
- Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics (LIFE2069)
- Mechanisms of Therapeutic Drugs (LIFE2105)
- Drugs and Diseases (LIFE2106)
Classes
This module may be delivered through lectures, seminars, workshops and labs etc
Assessment
- 100% Exam 1 (2-hour): Essay based exam
Assessed by end of designated period
Educational Aims
The aim of this module is to provide students with information about how toxicity occurs in the body, with examples of drug and non-drug toxicity. Students will learn how these fit into drug safety and the importance of drug safety for patients, as well as what is required for licencing a drug for use in humans. Students will also learn how toxicological safety testing is carried out.Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module, students should be able to:
1. Describe the principles of toxicology and their application in safety pharmacology
2. Describe mechanisms of toxicity
3. Give examples of both drug and non-drug toxicity
4. Describe the methods used to measure toxicity
5. Describe the process of applying for marketing authorisation for a drug
6. Describe the regulatory processes involving drug safety
7. Describe the impact of pharmacology on patient care with respect to the safety of medicines.
