Summary

This module enables students to experience contemporary research methods. Students will perform a laboratory or data analysis based research project on a topic related to the interests of a member of the academic staff. They will produce a dissertation explaining what work was performed and a discussion of the results obtained. Alternatively, students will select a topic of interest to them and a member of academic staff and conduct an in depth literature survey of the background and current state of knowledge relating to that topic. They will produce a comprehensive critical dissertation on the chosen topic and present novel ideas for future work in the area.

Target Students

Students registered for degrees in Biochemistry C700, C703, C741, C742, CC47, CC4R.

Additional Requirements

Only available for year 3 Biochemistry / Biochemistry & Molecular Medicine / Biochemistry & Genetics students

Classes

This module may be delivered through lectures, seminars, workshops and labs etc

Assessment

Assessed by end of designated period

Educational Aims

This module will provide students with an opportunity to use their initiative and knowledge in undertaking an original research study in biochemistry in depth in a modern research environment. The practical component of the project will provide an opportunity for the student to carry out original, relevant scientific research, and to relate the outcomes to scientific concepts and knowledge of the field. The student will contribute to the design of the study, gain familiarity with the methods/techniques and where appropriate safety procedures relevant to the topic, undertake data collection and appropriate quantitative analysis, and prepare a report.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding: Students will develop a deep understanding of a chosen biochemical topic through researching the area chosen and practical work on a new aspect of the topic. Intellectual skills: Students will understand the research that has previously been reported on their chosen topic. Students will be able to critically analyse the work reported on their topic and be able to design a research programme aimed at developing a particular area of research. Students will be able to report their research findings in an extended scientific report and be able to discuss their results with a member of academic staff. Professional practical skills: Critical analysis of research data; use of computers in biochemical research; design of biochemical experiments. Transferable skills: Use of the library; writing of a laboratory report; communication skills.
