Summary
The main focus of the module is self-directed independent study following a ‘law-related activity’ placement. Students arrange and complete 50 hours on a law-related activity in one or more organisations (e.g. traditional work placement with a solicitors firm, barristers chambers, volunteering with citizens advice). Structured Lectures workshops support key concepts such as reflective writing, critical reflection and consideration of wider contextual issues. In addition, students are provided with up to 2 hours supervision with allocated Academic Supervisor to discuss direction of research and the experience on placement. The remaining time is self-directed independent study to research the legal issues encountered on the placement, critical reflection, legal and employability skills, wider contextual issues to produce the written submission.
Target Students
Only available to Final Year students on the LLB or BA Law programmes. Also available to full year exchange students hosted by the School of Law.Students cannot take LAWW3137 if they are taking/have taken LAWW3085.
Classes
This module is taught through a combination of placement activity, supervision, and workshops.
Assessment
- 80% Coursework: 10 pages.
- 20% Oral exam: 20-minute oral exam.

Educational Aims
To enable students to develop the ability to exercise academic and critical intellectual skills in the context of a law-related activity/placement (and use experience on a law-related activity/ placement for academic credit).To develop legal and professional employability skills and the ability to critically reflect on performance of work-related tasks, the law, and its role in society.To develop the ability to learn autonomously in the context of a law-related activity and production of a related critical reflective report.To develop an understanding of relevant legal principles, legal rules and/or legal institutions and related wider contextual issues, social and/or ethical framework of the law or the legal profession.To develop analysis and evaluation and the ability to synthesise complex information and reason logically.To develop research skills (using primary and secondary sources and materials) and develop effective written and oral communication skills.Learning Outcomes
a) Demonstrates and applies knowledge and understanding of relevant legal principles, legal rules and/or legal institutions and identifies potential solutions to legal problems, analysing, evaluating and synthesising complex information;
b) Understands and appreciates the context in which the law operates demonstrating where necessary professional awareness and/or appreciation of the ethical framework of the law and/or the legal profession and/or an appreciation of the impact of the law and its role in society;
c) Reflects critically upon legal and professional employability skills acquired, developed and/or observed in the context of a law-related activity placement, including critical reflection on the performance of work-related tasks, application of relevant qualities and attributes, response to feedback and areas for personal and professional development.
d) Plans, researches and learns independently (demonstrating a consideration of primary and secondary legal sources on substantive legal and/or procedural issues and relevant literature on legal and employability skills);
e) Communicates effectively in writing, and orally, presenting information which is relevant and understandable in a reasoned and logical manner (complying with OCSOLA referencing scheme in the written submission).
