Summary

The module examines the rationale for intellectual property rights and their commercial importance; the national, European and wider international dimensions of the legal regulation of intellectual property rights; and the law governing the acquisition, exploitation and infringement of copyright and allied rights, including the application of copyright law in the context of modern information technology developments.

Target Students

Only available to UG Final Year students in the School of Law and exchange students hosted by the School of Law.

Educational Aims

To facilitate the understanding of the nature and function of intellectual property rights and of the law relating to intellectual property rights, with particular reference to copyright and allied rights. Students should develop a knowledge of some of the theoretical issues surrounding intellectual property rights of the national, European and wider international dimensions of legal regulation of intellectual property rights and of the UK statutory framework and relevant case law governing the acquisition.

Learning Outcomes

A knowledge and understanding of intellectual property law in the areas covered by the module, including the relevant statutory law, case law and literature; 

Ability to apply the law to practical situations in clear, concise, precise, systematic and structured way; 

Ability to analyse and evaluate critically an issue and argue an answer to it in clear, concise, precise, systematic and structured way.
