Summary

This module will develop both your knowledge of Mandarin and your ability to understand and communicate information in Mandarin to a level equivalent to 5. To ensure progress towards this goal, you will enjoy exposure to authentic written, audio and audio-visual documents appropriate to this level of study. Such exposure will be supplemented by learning activities that will develop your explicit knowledge of Mandarin; comprehension (reading/listening) of texts; your proficiency in spoken and written Mandarin; your knowledge and understanding of contemporary Chinese issues and themes such as the Chinese Diaspora. A single written assessment will replace all failed assessment components at the reassessment stage.

Target Students

This module is specially designed to address the Mandarin language learning needs of students who are non-Mandarin speaking Yue speakers. Consequently, it is available to students who are from overseas Chinese communities, such as in Canada, Hong Kong, Macau, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the USA and the UK.

Educational Aims

The module aims: to develop your comprehension and communication skills in Mandarin language to a level approximately equivalent to HSK5; develop your explicit understanding of Mandarin phonological and syntactical features; develop your knowledge and understanding of the Mandarin-speaking world; encourage you to adopt an independent approach to language learning and develop relevant professional skills in the areas of communication and team-working.
