Summary
This module will develop both your knowledge of Mandarin and your ability to understand and communicate information in Mandarin to a level equivalent to HSK4+. To ensure progress towards this goal, you will enjoy exposure to authentic written, audio and audio-visual documents appropriate to this level of study. Such exposure will be supplemented by learning activities that will develop your explicit knowledge of Mandarin; comprehension (reading/listening) of texts; your proficiency in spoken and written Mandarin; your knowledge and understanding of contemporary Chinese issues and themes such as the Chinese Diaspora. A single written assessment will replace all failed assessment components at the reassessment stage.

Target Students
This module is specially designed to address the Mandarin language learning needs of students who are non-Mandarin speaking Yue speakers. Consequently, it is available to students who are from overseas Chinese communities, such as in Canada, Hong Kong, Macau, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the USA and the UK.
Classes
- One 2-hour seminar each week for 11 weeks
- One 1-hour practicum each week for 11 weeks
Assessment
- 50% In-Class Exam: 1 x 20 mins in-class multi-skilled exam.
- 50% In-Class Written Exam: 1 x 90 mins in-class written exam.

Educational Aims
The module aims: to develop your comprehension and communication skills in Mandarin language to a level approximately equivalent to HSK4+; develop your explicit understanding of Mandarin phonological and syntactical features; develop your knowledge and understanding of the Mandarin-speaking world; encourage you to adopt an independent approach to language learning and develop relevant professional skills in the areas of communication and team-working.Learning Outcomes
A. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of this module, you will be able to: demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Mandarin vocabulary, structures and registers necessary to perform effectively at the HSK4+ level (A1) and developing knowledge understanding of a range of contemporary Chinese cultural, social and political issues and themes including the Chinese diaspora (A4).
B. Intellectual Skills
By the end of this module, you will be able to: gather, process and evaluate information from a variety of Mandarin sources (paper, audio, audio-visual, electronic) (B1) and you will learn to identify and describe questions and problems, and to resolve them effectively (B4).
C. Linguistic Skills
By the end of this module, you will be able to: comprehend authentic written, audio and audio-visual texts in Mandarin on a range of topics (C2 & C3) and perform spoken and written tasks at a level equivalent to HSK4+ (C1).
D. Professional, practical and transferable skills
By the end of this module, you will demonstrate effective organisation and time management skills and the ability to write and think productively under pressure (in examination conditions (D7); the ability to use IT both as a means of communication and as an aide to learning (D8).
