Summary

The module covers speaking, listening, reading and writing.  Students will be expected to participate actively in class lesson, which involves preparation before classes and follow-up work after classes, in order to improve their four skills. Speech skills will be focused on, to improve fluency and pronunciation in formal, informal and practical speech. Listening skills will be practised in conversations in class lessons and at the Self Access Centre or on Moodle, as part of homework. The class lessons will progress on the basis of grammatical points raised by the textbook and various topics set by the convenor such as work related issues, future prospects, health issues, education, leisure and current affairs.Presentation skills & debate techniques will be practised. 

Any resits needed will be assessed via an in-person written exam and an online aural (listening) assessment.

Target Students

UNNC Exchange Students studying International Communication Studies, International Studies or International Business. There is a limited number of places on this module. Students are reminded that enrolments which are not agreed by the Offering School in advance may be cancelled without notice.

Educational Aims

The overall aim of the module is to develop further competence in the four skills of speaking, reading, listening and writing in Japanese, together with more complex grammatical structures using authentic materials. Emphasis is placed on oral and aural skills, making use of videos, the language laboratories and the Self Access Centre.

Learning Outcomes

• Improve fluency and pronunciation further, to achieve near authentic speech
• The development of comprehension, reading and writing skills of an advanced order
• Increased grammatical and syntactic knowledge of the target language
• Increased formal vocabulary acquisition
• The development of summary writing skills
