Summary

This module further strengthens the four skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing to enable students to gather and process information accurately and quickly through discussion, Text book and authentic materials from radio, TV and online as well as from written sources are used.

A single written assessment will replace all failed assessment components at the reassessment stage.

Target Students

This module is open to all students provided their home department approves. Priority will be given to students on the BA in International Communication Studies.Please note, your enrolment on this module will be conditional on subsequent attendance at an assessment by the Language Centre, where your appropriate language level will be confirmed. Failure to attend the assessment may result in your enrolment being cancelled. Dates and times of the assessment sessions will be advertised on the Language Centre website.

Classes

3 hours class contact per week. The classes are conducted in the Target Language and focus on contemporary topics which aim to give students an up-to-date insight into the country where the Target Language is spoken. A review of relevant grammar is also undertaken.

Educational Aims

This module aims to consolidate and extend the students' knowledge of the subject by developing the four main language skills of speaking, writing, reading and listening. Special emphasis will be put on developing more sophisticated oral and written skills, enabling the students to deal proficiently and accurately with real-life situations (such as information-retrieval from written and spoken sources, résumé- and report-writing in the Target Language).

Learning Outcomes

The course involves working in small groups and thus helps in the development of presentation skills, interaction and organisation.

Practice is offered in summary writing and the ability to present a coherent argument or explanation. 

 Time management 

Topics chosen increase cultural awareness.
