Summary

This module develops the speaking and productive skills of language learning to enable the students to function effectively at an intermediate level. The module stresses the productive skills, particularly spoken and written ones. Teaching through the medium of the target language is the norm.

A single multiskilled assessment will replace all failed assessment components at the reassessment stage.

Target Students

This module is open to all students provided their home department approves. Priority will be given to students on the BA in International Communication Studies. There is a limited number of places on this module. Students are reminded that enrolments which are not agreed by the Offering School in advance may be cancelled without notice. Available to JYA/Exchange students.Please note, your enrolment on this module will be conditional on subsequent attendance at an assessment by the Language Centre, where your appropriate language level will be confirmed. Failure to attend the assessment may result in your enrolment being cancelled. Dates and times of the assessment sessions will be advertised on the Language Centre website.

Classes

The School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies operates an attendance policy. The details of this policy can be found in the student handbook on Workspace and in module handbooks. 3 hours class contact per week

Educational Aims

The accent at this stage is firmly on the productive skills of speaking and writing. Each weekly session will consist of a variety of activities arising from the themes and structures which underpin the course programme. Students will also learn to write formal and informal letters in the target language. The passive skills of reading comprehension and listening comprehension will not be neglected as ample practice will be given in class in these particular skills. Students will be encouraged to use the Self-Access Centre where a wide variety of materials is available for follow-up work.
