Summary
This module concentrates on revising and developing the basic structures acquired during previous study. The four skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing are expanded to enable participation in discussions with reasonable fluency and accuracy. Particular emphasis will be placed on listening and speaking practice. Teaching methods involve the use of language laboratories. The target language is used as much as possible in class. Teaching is communicative with regular opportunities for pair and group work. In addition students are required to undertake a programme of independent study.
Any resits needed will be assessed via an in-person written exam assessment.

Target Students
UNNC/UNMC Exchange Students studying International Communications Studies, International Studies or International Business. There is a limited number of places on this module. Students are reminded that enrolments which are not agreed by the Offering School in advance may be cancelled without notice.
Classes
- Two 2-hour seminars each week for 10 weeks
4 hours of class contact per week. At least 4 hours of independent study per week. The School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies operates an attendance policy. The details of this policy can be found in the student handbook on Workspace and in module handbooks.
Assessment
- 40% Inclass Exam: 1 x 90 mins In-class Multi Skilled exam.
- 20% Inclass Oral Presentation: 1 x 6-9 mins In-class mid semester group Oral presentation.
- 40% Inclass Oral Exam: 1 x Oral discussion exam, 15 mins group discussion.

Educational Aims
The overall aim of the module is to develop further competence in the four skills of speaking, reading, listening and writing in Japanese, together with more complex grammatical structures using authentic materials. Emphasis is placed on oral and aural skills, making use of videos, the language laboratories and the Self Access Centre.Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and Understanding:
- Students will use the newly acquired language structures to give oral presentations about the country/countries where the target language is spoken.
- They will further develop the following skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing in the target language (e.g. oral discussions, listening with discrimination, information retrieval, textual reorganisation involved in essay-writing).
Intellectual Skills:
- On completing the module students will be able to manipulate the language using the skills they have acquired in speaking, listening, reading and writing the target language together with grammatical structures at an intermediate level.
- Students will also have enhanced their awareness of different cultures.
Professional Practical Skills:
- Use of technology – students will use technology to research and prepare topics for oral and written tasks.
Transferable Skills:
- Problem solving, use of dictionary, presentation skills, time management, independent study, pair and group work.
