Summary

This module concentrates on revising and developing the basic structures acquired during previous study. The four skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing are expanded to enable participation in discussions with reasonable fluency and accuracy. Particular emphasis will be placed on listening and speaking practice. Teaching methods involve the use of language laboratories. The target language is used as much as possible in class. Teaching is communicative with regular opportunities for pair and group work. In addition students are required to undertake a programme of independent study.

Any resits needed will be assessed via an in-person written exam assessment.

Target Students

UNNC/UNMC Exchange Students studying International Communications Studies, International Studies or International Business. There is a limited number of places on this module. Students are reminded that enrolments which are not agreed by the Offering School in advance may be cancelled without notice.

Classes

4 hours of class contact per week. At least 4 hours of independent study per week. The School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies operates an attendance policy. The details of this policy can be found in the student handbook on Workspace and in module handbooks.

Educational Aims

The overall aim of the module is to develop further competence in the four skills of speaking, reading, listening and writing in Japanese, together with more complex grammatical structures using authentic materials. Emphasis is placed on oral and aural skills, making use of videos, the language laboratories and the Self Access Centre.
