Summary
This module is designed for students with no prior knowledge of British Sign Language and will develop an understanding of simple words and sentences in British Sign Language. As the focus of this module is on communication skills, a large proportion of class time will be based on practising the skills they have learned to reinforce vocabulary and language structures by signing in groups and in pairs in a variety of question-and-answer and role play exercises using productive and receptive skills they have learned in the weekly sessions.
There will be access to online course materials, BSL videos, BSL websites/Youtube clips to enhance learning.

- One 2-hour seminar each week for 11 weeks
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 11 weeks
Assessment
- 25% Coursework 1: 1000 word essay
- 25% Listening Exam: Receptive task based on video - 25 minutes
- 50% Oral: 1:1 conversation with tutor - 5 mins

Educational Aims
This module aims to give students an understanding of the basic principles of BSL and the ability to use beginner BSL.Learning Outcomes
A. Knowledge and understanding
Understand the basic principle of BSL
Understand the use of a limited range of simple words and sentences in BSL
Be able to fingerspell in BSL
B. Intellectual skills: B1:
Demonstrate an awareness of deaf culture and BSL development
C. Professional Skills:
Students who successfully complete this course will reach the standard of 50% of Level 1 Signature Award in British Sign Language.
