Summary
The module aims to enable students;
1. Understand and develop an intercultural awareness by understanding one’s own culture, views and beliefs.
2. Explore various models of intercultural competence
3. Explore cultural differences in several practical and abstract context such as stereotype, taboo, prejudice, social etiquette, cultural models, etc
4. Develop independent and original thinking, critical analysis and self-reflection within a multi-national context
5. Comprehend the principles of cultural diversity and adaptation
Assessment - When contents of coursework are not thorough, students may need to re-work on original task and re-submit.
A single piece of coursework will replace all failed assessment components at the reassessment stage.

Target Students
All students across campus, including International exchange students.
Classes
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 10 weeks
- One 1-hour lecture each week for 10 weeks
Assessment
- 70% Coursework 1: Portfolio, summary of cultural dimensions drawn from lectures with own reflective analysis throughout the course
- 30% Presentation 1: Poster presentation in narrated recording.

Educational Aims
To enable students to broaden the understanding of their own culture and the culture of ‘other’. In particular, this module aims to facilitate students to develop a cultural awareness(1) Introduce the concept of culture and intercultural competence;(2) Raise awareness on the intercultural challenges that may be encountered in social and professional contexts;(3) Present a range of perspectives, contexts and attitudes that may contribute to enhancing the awareness of the intricacies of the current globalised society;(4) Explore an array of scenarios where communication across cultures is essential. Equip the students with the critical tools necessary to recognise possible complexities and opportunities.Learning Outcomes
1. Show understanding of intercultural competence, both at a theoretical level and in specific contexts;
2. Communicate more effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds;
3. Reflect on our own culture in order to understand other cultures;
4. Show awareness of equality, diversity and inclusion complexities when comparing the UK with the rest of the world;
5. Identify intercultural challenges in different cultural contexts, including professional environments;
6. Reflect on the role of modern languages and cultures for business practices;
7. Identify linguistic patterns that influence the cultural characteristics of a country.
