Summary

This module assumes no prior knowledge of the language. The basic structure of the language is introduced through topics related to giving and requesting personal information. The student is taught to speak, read, write and understand materials in the target language relating to everyday situations. A single multiskilled assessment will replace all failed assessment components at the reassessment stage.

Target Students

This module is open to all students provided their home department approves. There is a limited number of places on this module. Students are reminded that enrolments which are not agreed by the Offering School in advance may be cancelled without notice.Available to JYA/Exchange students.This Module has been identified as being particularly suitable for first year students, including those from other Schools.Please note, your enrolment on this module will be conditional on subsequent attendance at an assessment by the Language Centre, where your appropriate language level will be confirmed. Failure to attend the assessment may result in your enrolment being cancelled. Dates and times of the assessment sessions will be advertised on the Language Centre website.

Educational Aims

The module introduces the basic structure of the language through topics related to social and everyday life in the foreign country. Students will acquire the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing together with basic grammatical structures which will enable them to manipulate the language.

A3 Ab initio Korean syntax
A4 Ab initio Korean sentence semantics
A5 Gist comprehension and more detailed reconstruction of audio material

B1 The ability to understand the standard Korean linguistic system both spoken and in the written form in the context of the topics studied
