Summary
This module builds on the introductory work of Stage 1a. The student is taught to understand and produce written and spoken information in topic areas not covered during the Autumn semester.The fours skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking are covered together with a study of the grammar involved in using the language at this level. A single multiskilled assessment will replace all failed assessment components at the reassessment stage.

Target Students
This module is open to all students provided their home department approves.There is a limited number of places on this module. Students are reminded that enrolments which are not agreed by the Offering School in advance may be cancelled without notice.Please note, your enrolment on this module will be conditional on subsequent attendance at an assessment by the Language Centre, where your appropriate language level will be confirmed. Failure to attend the assessment may result in your enrolment being cancelled. Dates and times of the assessment sessions will be advertised on the Language Centre website.
Classes
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 10 weeks
- One 2-hour seminar each week for 10 weeks

Assessment
- 60% In-class exam: 1 x in-class 45-60 mins multi skilled exam
- 40% In-class oral exam: 1 x in-class multi skilled oral exam. 15 mins group discussion

Educational Aims
The basic structure of the language will be extended through topics related to both social and work-related situations. All four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking are covered. The grammatical structures acquired in the Autumn Semester will be reinforced and developed furtherLearning Outcomes

- A1 Elementary Arabic pronunciation
- A2 Standard Arabic spelling which builds on skills developed in semester A
- A3 Elementary Arabic syntax
- A4 Elementary Arabic sentence semantics
- A5 Gist comprehension and more detailed reconstruction of more challenging audio material
- A6 Elementary oral skills
B. Intellectual skills:
- B1 The ability to understand the standard Arabic linguistic system both spoken and in the written form in the context of the topics studied
