Summary
This module assumes no prior knowledge of the language. It introduces the basic structure of the language through topics relating to social and everyday life in the country. Each session will consist of a variety of activities arising from the themes and structures which underpin the course programme. A single multi-skilled assessment will replace all failed assessment components at the reassessment stage.

Target Students
This module is open to all students subject to home department approval. However, priority will be given to 1st and 2nd year students.There is a limited number of places on this module. Students are reminded that enrolments which are not agreed by the Offering School in advance may be cancelled without notice.Students enrolling on this module must be complete beginners in Italian.The Language Centre reserves the right to check qualifications with home departments and move students to a more appropriate level if necessary.This Module has been identified as being particularly suitable for first year students, including those from other Schools.Also available to JYA/Exchange studentsPlease note, your enrolment on this module will be conditional on subsequent attendance at an assessment by the Language Centre, where your appropriate language level will be confirmed. Failure to attend the assessment may result in your enrolment being cancelled. Dates and times of the assessment sessions will be advertised on the Language Centre website.
Classes
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 12 weeks
- One 2-hour seminar each week for 12 weeks

Assessment
- 60% In-class exam: 1 x in-class 45 mins Multi Skilled Exam
- 40% In-class oral exam: 1 x in-class oral exam, 8-10 mins group discussion.

Educational Aims
Students will learn and practise the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing together with basic grammatical structures. This will enable them to manipulate the language and participate effectively in everyday social situations. Full use will be made of communicative methods and, as far as possible, teaching will be through the target language.Learning Outcomes
