Summary
This module assumes no prior knowledge of the language. It introduces the basic structure of the language through topics relating to social and everyday life in the country. Each session will consist of a variety of activities arising from the themes and structures which underpin the course programme.
Any resit exams will be held in the summer resit period. A single multi-skilled assessment will replace all failed assessment components at the reassessment stage.

Target Students
This module is open to all students subject to home department approval. However, priority will be given to 1st and 2nd year students.Students enrolling on this module must be complete beginners in French.The Language Centre reserves the right to check qualifications with home departments and move students to a more appropriate level if necessary.Also available to JYA/Exchange students.Please note, your enrolment on this module will be conditional on subsequent attendance at an assessment by the Language Centre, where your appropriate language level will be confirmed. Failure to attend the assessment may result in your enrolment being cancelled. Dates and times of the assessment sessions will be advertised on the Language Centre website.

- One 1-hour seminar each week for 20 weeks

Assessment
- 60% In-Class Exam: 1 x In-class 45 mins Multi Skilled Exam
- 40% In-Class Oral Exam: 1 x In-class oral exam, 8-10 mins group discussion
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
Students will learn and practise the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing together with basic grammatical structures. This will enable them to manipulate the language and participate effectively in everyday social situations. Full use will be made of communicative methods and, as far as possible, teaching will be through the target language.Learning Outcomes
• understand familiar words and very basic phrases concerning self, family and friends and immediate concrete surroundings when people speak slowly and clearly
• understand familiar words and very simple sentences, for example on notices, posters or in brief, simple paragraphs on topics covered
• interact in a simple way provided the other person is prepared to repeat or rephrase things at a slower rate of speech.
• ask and answer simple questions in areas of immediate need or on very familiar topics
• write short, simple passages (approximately 100 words) for example sending e-mails of introduction, fill in forms with personal details, for example entering name, nationality and address on a hotel registration form.
A. Knowledge and Understanding of pronunciation, standard spelling and syntax, gist comprehension and reconstruction of audio material, basic oral skills;
B. Intellectual skills: the ability to understand the standard linguistic system, in both spoken and written form, in the context of the topics studied, develop cultural awareness;
C. Professional Skills: Preparation of short oral and written presentations on topics covered, Listening and reading with discrimination in order to elicit information;
D. Transferable Skills: Pair and group work, Time management, Independent language study, Ability to organise and present material, Ability to communicate effectively at a basic level.
Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR):
The learning outcomes for Inter Faculty Stage 1A are equivalent to level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference, guidelines used to describe achievements of learners of foreign languages across Europe.
