Summary
The Neonatal and Paediatric ECP module provides a route for the practitioner to develop high quality specialist and evidence-based knowledge and skills, in caring for either acutely and critically ill neonates, or acutely and critically ill infants, children and young people.
This theoretical module aims to be responsive to service needs, supporting practitioners in developing clinical reasoning and decision-making skills appropriate to levels 1, 2 and 3 high dependency/critical care. Module content therefore maps directly to UK National professional standards set out for Paediatric Critical Care by the Paediatric Critical Care Society (Standards for Education in Paediatric Critical Care Specialist Nursing, 2015); and for neonates by the British Association for Perinatal Medicine (Matching knowledge and skills for Qualified In Speciality (QIS) Neonatal nurses, 2012).
Delivered by expert practitioners in neonatal and children’s critical care, the module provides a unique blend of in-person and digital (online) learning to support the students exploring and critically reflecting on contemporary, holistic care in the speciality of choice. Specifically, this includes exploring legal and ethical issues in neonatal and/or paediatric critical care and enhancing leadership and teaching skills; and discussing underpinning research as part of developing and understanding the key evidence base for care, as a pre-requisite to enhancing clinical practice through developing clinical expertise.

Develop fundamental, clinical, high dependency and critical care knowledge to underpin clinical reasoning and decision making within clinical situations involving neonates or infants, children and young people.4. Utilise research and evidence-based information to systematically and critically, analyse local, national and international standards of care.5. Apply learning as part of evaluating clinical practice and supporting quality improvement processes.6. Enhance existing abilities to support practice-based clinical teaching within the multi-disciplinary team.7. Reflect on own professional development through the module as part of developing own leadership abilities.Learning Outcomes
