Summary

The provision of education and training in the health and care sector is crucial to ensuring the recruitment and retention of a safe and sustainable workforce. With the ambitions set out in the NHS Educator Workforce Strategy (2023), there is a need to ensure there are sufficient well-educated clinical educators with the knowledge, skills, behaviours and confidence necessary to provide high quality learning experiences to the wider health and care workforce. This module aims to develop such clinical educators.

By then end of the module, participants will be able to underpin their practice with the principles of respect, empathy, equality and diversity to foster a learning environment and provide a learning experience that is inclusive, supportive and safe. Throughout the module participants will be guided to conduct searches of diverse sources of information and evidence to underpin their education practice, learning about educational principles, techniques and theories underpinning mentorship, coaching, clinical supervision, appraisal, teaching and learning, assessment and feedback, and evaluation of learning. They will learn how to identify the training and education needs of colleagues in their area of practice, using the available resource effectively to develop a business case to communicate this need. They will be able to reflect on their own experience to identify their ongoing learning needs to continually develop as an adaptable, reliable and competent practitioner.

For those undertaking this module alongside the portfolio module in the PGCert Enhanced Clinical Practice (Clinical Education) pathway, having been mapped to the Academy of Medical Educators (AoME) professional standards, the successful completion of both modules will enable participants to build evidence to demonstrate achievement of the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to apply for membership of AoME.
