Summary
This year-long module examines histories and critical theories of cities and urbanism through a focused study of a European cultural city such as Berlin, Paris or Rome. Lectures and seminars in the Autumn semester explore the rich artistic, architectural and historical developments of the destination city. Teaching in the Spring semester focuses on key themes and theoretical ideas such as civic identity, memory and memorial, public space, urban development, the roles of museums and the politics of display. The module includes a group visit of several days to study the city first hand, which takes place during the Spring semester reading week. Formative assessment across both semesters prepares students to develop and research an independent essay topic that comprises the summative assessment for the module.
