Summary
This module explores Nottingham’s creative past and present through the study of its art and architecture. It is structured around weekly site visits, which allow students to study a wide range of locations and artefacts at first hand.
We will explore different types of urban spaces, including the residential, commercial, industrial, recreational, and ceremonial as well as different types of sites, including art galleries, city streets, churches, factories, monuments, municipal buildings, museums, private estates, and public parks.
We will examine the ways in which art and architecture have been used to express civic, familial, institutional, political, and religious identities. We will also consider the development of the city over time, exploring questions of heritage and conservation.
Key sites may include: Boots D10 Pharmaceutical Building, Nottingham Arboretum, Nottingham Castle Museum & Art Gallery, Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham Council House, Old Market Square, St. Barnabas Cathedral, St. Mary’s Church, The Lace Market, The Park Estate, University Park Campus, and Wollaton Hall and Deer Park.
To support our study of these sites, this module will draw upon archival material from Manuscripts and Special Collections, including architectural drawings, guide books, maps, newspapers, pamphlets, and photographs.
A single coursework assessment will replace all failed assessment components at the reassessment stage.
