Summary

Food systems and fashion are both influenced by – and go on to influence – social, cultural, political, economic, and environmental contexts. This module will use geographical approaches to help us better understand these contexts in light of ongoing social inequality and environmental exploitation. We will examine how and why different systems have developed, different politics which arise in response to these realities, and the hidden costs of many suggested ‘alternatives’. This module will give us ways to think about the political ecologies and economies of food and fashion, collective and individual agency, and navigating existing structures and organizations while discussing ways to work towards those which are more just. You will leave this course with an awareness of the interrelated social and environmental themes across food and fashion systems, alongside the skills to be a more critical citizen of our current world.
