Summary
Small group tutorials in both the Autumn and Spring semesters in which emphasis will be placed on discussion, essay writing and seminar presentations which will be based on topics in the Qualifying Year Geography modules and from broader intellectual, cultural and political fields.
Target Students
Only available to those on courses F800 BSc Geography, L700 BA Geography, LV74 BA Archaeology and Geography, L7N1 BA Geography with Business.
Classes
Teaching will take place through a mixture of lectures and tutorials.
Assessment
- 40% Coursework 1: 1,500 words (Autumn)
- 40% Coursework 2: 1,500 words (Spring)
- 20% Presentation: Presentation

Educational Aims
The aims of the module are to: to develop intellectual skills in small-group tutorials based on topics in Qualifying Year Geography and from wider intellectual, cultural and political fields to develop skills of problem recognition and definition to develop powers to identify and evaluate approaches to problem-solving to develop skills of information collection and synthesis and evaluate the significance and relevance of information to develop powers of reasoning, discussion and cogent argument to develop communication skills in the form of essay writing, verbal articulation of ideas and issues through group discussions and seminar presentationsLearning Outcomes
On completion of the module students will have:
an understanding of plagiarism and coursework submission software
developed library research skills including use of catalogues and electronic databases
developed essay writing skills including referencing skills
developed powers of reasoning, discussion and cogent argument
engaged in informed, reflective and critical discussion of geographical issues
developed communication and presentation skills
familiarity with the School's marking criteria
